Mission Statement
Tuesday a.m. Bible Study promotes the sharing of personal experiences as they relate to scriptures as well as other pertinent discussions and prayer so that God’s presence may be better realized.
We are a relaxed group in which we learn together and the only requirements are the desire to learn more about our faith and its foundations and teachings plus the desire for fellowship with and inspiration from other Catholic women.
We have been using the Liguori Press Bible Study Program which provides us with commentary/reflection books to go along with our Bible readings. The series is written by Father William A. Anderson, DMin, PhD. He earned his doctor of ministry degree from St. Mary’s Seminary & University in Baltimore and his doctorate in sacred theology from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. His writing is clear, concise and very illuminating especially for those difficult to understand verses. Liguori’s scripture references are from the New American Bible so if you have that edition that would be best to use. That is not mandatory, however.
In the fall of 2024 we began five Old Testament books, compiled in a commentary book called Biblical Novellas. The books are entitled Tobit, Judith, Esther and 1 and 2 Maccabees. Tobit is a fictitious biographical story about Tobit and his family in exile. The Book of Judith is a legendary story about a widow named Judith, who was much esteemed for her piety and who saved the Jewish people from the Assyrian Army. Esther is also credited with helping to save the Jews from annihilation in another story. This latter event is celebrated every year as the feast of Purim. The last two books, 1 and 2 Maccabees, are about a revolt by the Jews against the Seleucid Empire. The leader and hero was Judas Maccabeus. These two books plus Tobit and Judith are not in the Protestant Bibles as they are considered apocryphal “doubtful authenticity” by them. As of this date, February, 2025, we have finished Tobit and are learning about Judith’s heroic deeds.
Interested in Joining?
If you are interested in gaining a little more understanding of Biblical events, the Jewish culture at the time of Jesus, theological interpretations and symbolism of the writings, and, of course, the path Jesus has plotted out for us to live as Catholic Christians, our group might be of interest to you.
We meet October through June on Tuesdays from 9:15 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on the second floor of the Multi Purpose Room in the Cook Faith Formation Building. Come check out the class! We can set you up for a commentary book but you need to bring a Catholic Bible.
